How to Commute Smarter in the City

A reader recently asked me how to make her commute smarter. Here’s what I told her.

1. Know your options

Think beyond your go. Learn about the city, the dangers, and the areas to avoid. Learn when it's the best time to commute, and explore train, buses, subways, bikeshares, or other forms of transportation. Each mode gives you flexibility.

Open a maps app and have a bird's eye view of your commute path once you hit the city. Know the different routes, and have an escape plan.

2. Plan around peak

Avoid the rush. If possible, shift your commute time by 15–30 minutes earlier or later. Fewer crowds = faster trip, less danger, and lower stress. Aim to leave time for Mr. Murphy and things going wrong. It may feel unnecessary—but late trains, traffic, or a slow walk shouldn’t ruin your day.

3. Keep essentials with you and in a grab-and-go bag

Keep your phone and wallet with you, in your pockets; if possible keep the charger for that phone with you as well. Place everything else in a small backpack or slingbag. Smaller bags allow you to be more nimble and move faster. Be ready to ditch that bag if necessary.

4. Dress smart

Wear layers and comfortable shoes. Be prepared for changes like unexpected rain, chilly stations, or warm crowds. Adapt to the style of clothing people wear around you, blend in.

5. Always assume you are a target

Make sure you keep your eyes off the phone, your ears clear of headphones, and your head constantly moving. Situational awareness is key to a safe and stress-free commute.
